Republican Debate or Childish Play?

Simply put, it was nice to have an adult in the room. The true character of a man is manifest in times of stress and when all things are in commotion. Tonight in the Republican "Debate," Mitt Romney stood as the one candidate in the Republican field with character, integrity and respect for the office he seeks. He is intelligent and capable to lead, and it was self evident this evening. Amid the childish and immature barbs thrust at him by an angry and mean spirited John McCain and an ignorant and immature Mike Huckabee, Mitt was respectful, responsible and resolute in elevating the dialog to the stature of the office he seeks. He stood the challenge well without digressing into the worlds of McCain and Huckabee.

John McCain and Mike Huckabee were an embarrassment to the office they seek, and without the capacity to speak intelligently about the issues facing our nation, they dissolved into childish and immature personal attacks and took absolute glee and pride in their immaturity. I was pleased to see their true colors and lack of character on display as it is foretelling of their nature. I was embarrassed for the Republican Party, as it reflected poorly on the Republican electorate that supports them. Although Rudy and Fred participated in the childish attacks, they did so wanting to be a part of the "me too" crowd. In spite of such Fred at least spoke to issues with intelligence and may well have helped himself somewhat tonight. Rudy was Rudy and added value on some points, but didn't really stand out. John McCain and Mike Huckabee had their Howard Dean moments tonight and it should become evident on Tuesday. I am anxious to be in New Hampshire to enjoy the moment.

The only other candidate, besides Mitt Romney, who showed respect for the office of POTUS and the process of reasonable debate was Ron Paul. Amazing!

I was amazed at the derision shown Congressman Paul during the debates Saturday evening. As usual, Paul showed a commitment to the constitution and his beliefs/principals regardless of what anyone else thought. I think he's an intelligent and well-reasoned candidate. I was disgusted that Fox would bar him from the debates tonight.

After Mr. Romney's NH loss, I read this blog on Race42008 and wanted to share it with you. I totally agree with what this blogger said:

Romney is a threat but has been taken down..way down. He needs to start throwing around lines like when the going get tough, the tough get going and “when a romney drowns, look upstream” and mean it.

However, if he does not connect with the average american it will not work. He needs to connect with the regular guy. I make a lot of money and still don’t think he can relate to me.

However, cheesy shots of him with a hard hat or serving burgers won’t do it. It has to be real. He needs to look at the camera and say:

“I know you are worried about the future. I know you are wondering if your kids are going to make it in this world. I know some of you are wondering if tomorrow’s paycheck is going to get you through the next week. I will be honest; I too am worried about America’s future. Let me tell you, however, I have some ideas about how we can work together to ensure that your kids and my kids have the opportunities that we had.

When I was young I had a lot of ideas. Some of them worked out and I’ve been successful in a number of areas of my life. I learned a lot of things along the way. One of those things was how to create jobs and how to let ideas and hard work flourish to bring about success. I beleive those skills are one of the most important things I can bring to the Presidency. How to help us as America’s stay competive.

You see, I believe, that with the right ideas we can do anything. We can get you and your kids the education you need to get ahead. We can get you healthcare so that you’re not knocked out financially by a serious illness. We can help you and every American achieve the American dream.

I know you are worried…but I will tell you….I really believe we can make this world a better place for my kids and your kids. Please consider voting for me this Tuesday. I’m Mitt Romney and I approves this message.”
